(Mother) Nature - Jess Moore

  1. I found this to be a very attractive photograph, but couldn’t actually put my finger on why, so I struggled a bit to title it. I came up with “From the Depths”. The bird on the far right appears to be rising from the water, while his/her partner appears to have already escaped and waits for the companion to do the same. Further, the rebound of the raindrops creates the illusion of some unidentifiable creature pushing its way to the surface as well.

I like the numerous dichotomies contained in this image. The concrete birds coupled with the water—the former a man-made representation of nature, the latter nature at its most elemental. The photograph is at once calming and disconcerting, the stillness and rigidity of the birds, together with the swirling maelstrom of the water. The sharp focus on the birds and the short depth of field/slow shutter speed add to this effect. I think the lack of color—just whites, greys, browns—in this image also adds to the feeling of foreboding. Finally, although it is apparent that this is water, its disturbance can make it seem at times like it is boiling, like a cauldron, adding to its unsettled nature.

I cannot suggest improvements to this photograph, because anything you might do could change the effect of the water. The reflection is harsh, but any less reflection would change the character of the water. I like the cropping you did, because while the eye is drawn to the birds (good focus, contrast), cropping them as you did forces the viewer to consider the water—ultimately, the water represents our theme of nature better than the birds

  2. "intriguing and attractive..."; "initially struggled..."

  3. ... and if you look above the top bird's beak, that appears to be the image of a skull in the water. :-)
