7:30 (a.m.) - Jess Moore

  1. This photo is great with its unique perspective and the frozen sugar crystals. I admire the way you captured the sugar, while focusing on the spoon as well as each sugar crystal. The rich color of the coffee and the shiny spoon kind of balance each other. The color of the coffee weighs the photo down at that end, but the brightness of the spoon and the sugar maintain the balance of the image. I think it's great that little ripples in the coffee are visible and that you can faintly see the bubbles around the edge of the coffee. I also admire you for not only taking a great shot, but doing so at 7:30am! (I honestly tried, but nothing I photographed this morning was worth keeping.) The roundness of everything offsets the sugar crystals nicely, so your cropping works. The only critique I have is that the sugar in the spoon is such a bright white that it almost distracts from the falling sugar.

This fits in the whole as something less literal and more of a storytelling image. I feel this prompt brings very literal images of "@7:30" and then ones that tell the story of what this person was doing at that time. You were obviously getting ready for your day with a cup of coffee. This is what your 7:30 looked like this morning. I would associate coffee with the morning, so I can see how this works. Instead of posting numerical images that represent the time, you posted an image associated with the time of the day. It’s not a sunset/sunrise image, so it’s not quite as literal, but it tells the story of your morning. I believe it works as an early morning association, so it can definitely represent 7:30am and fits in because people either posted about what they were doing or something more literal. Great work!

  2. Very interesting use of shutter speed to capture the sugar. Good thinking.
