Detail--Audrey Harman

  1. This picture stands out from the “Detail” group, because it has a feeling of activity. Most of the images are a macro shot of one item (and they are lovely!) but with this particular shot, it represents the work it takes to get to the “payoff.”

This is a landscape image of nesting dolls, with the bottom halves still nested forming concentric circles in the bottom of the image, and the top halves of the dolls scattered in the background. The smallest doll is the where the focus is, still in the center of the bottom halves, but out and tilted so that we can see all of her on top.

This image uses depth of field really well, while the smallest doll is in focus, the top halves are not, and contribute to the story of the nesting dolls. They are all placed haphazardly, where we usually see a set of nesting dolls lined up from smallest to largest with precise precision. It reminds us that nesting dolls are toys and are fun!

The dolls are painted with a light blue dress, with some dark blue and orange highlights, and she is sitting on a dark brown wooden table – because it is muted, it helps make the dolls stand out. The highlights of the dark blue and orange help to move your eye around in the image.

I think the only thing I would modify with this image is making it a little brighter and cropping off some of the right side of the image, where it is just the table,
