Something I Can't Live Without---Yi Xue

  1. I really like this photo because of the great composition. The cup and saucer combination is really great, and I can definitely understand how you can't live without tea. Coffee is something I drink to wake up, but tea is something I drink because I enjoy. Something about the bamboo placemat with the foliage design gives it a homey feel. The white of the cup and plate stand out nicely, but not too starkly, and the curve of the plate adds a whimsical touch. I like how tidy this piece is--even the tea leaves are neatly arranged without any stray drips of tea. The reflection of the flash is the only thing that needs improvement, but the fact that it's centered makes it okay that it draws my attention. I think you could work on the curves in Photoshop to give the shot a pinch more depth and contrast--make the tea and the tea leaves stand out even more against the white plate and cup.

To me, it seems like your favorite thing that you can't live without is a tea break. It's not even about the tea, it's the time it takes to prepare it perfectly and then the relaxing time spent drinking it. Tea time is a pause in the day where you can have an excuse to procrastinate or put your work aside. As a whole, I can see that your photo fits nicely because whether it was something specific or an idea, it was the symbolism that the photo represented. Everyone seemed to really post things they cared about, as opposed to just material items. Yours fits into the whole because not only the positioning of the photo is thoughtful, but the subject matter is too. I also noticed a lot of food and beverages were present, so it fits into that category too!

Great work! (Now I'm going to make myself some tea.)
