Animal--Audrey Harman

  1. This image shows a dog’s head centered in a lush garden featuring a variety of dark green, light green, and yellow leaves. The wide leaves obscure the rest of the animal’s body. The dog is looking somewhat to the viewer’s left (a fact that greatly helps this photograph NOT fall into the snapshot category), and many of the leaves seem to be pointing that way as well, leading one’s eyes in that direction. The dog appears well groomed and dry amongst the wet foliage, suggesting he has recently arrived at his hiding spot. This photograph has good color, good contrast, and good focus. Some of the background leaves are a bit soft, suggesting a moderate to shallow depth of field, which is effective here. I would suggest placing the dog to the right in the image, so that he is looking into space more than he is right now. The centering doesn’t do it for me.

The image definitely fits into the theme of the day. At first glance, with all the greenery and the coloring of the dog, I thought Audrey photographed a fox coming out of the edge of someone’s garden or yard. One could argue that this is more a photo of leaves in a garden than an animal, but I would disagree; the dog is still the primary focus of the work, because it is so different than all the rest of the image. The leaves serve as a beautiful, but still secondary, contrast for the animal.

  2. I wish I had been able to show the picture of my bigger dog chasing her (that's what she was looking at). She likes to hide in the garden because the other dog can't reach her in there.
