7:30-Kyle Routson

  1. For Kyle’s submission, she chose to capture the sky at 7:30 p.m. Her image is shot with a long-depth of field and features a bluish-gray cloudy sky framed by very dark greenery. The contrast of the sky with the trees is nice – and I enjoy how the sky peaks through the shapes created by the leaves. Even though I can see a sun in the background – I feel strongly that the sun is setting and not rising because of the darkness the photographer chose to portray in the foreground.

Her work fits well with the submissions for this post. It falls into one of the main categories: time of day scenery. Many other submissions show the sky and the landscape at this time of day, although no one chose to capture it at 7:30 a.m. When I think of this time of day, I think of the “changing of the guards” – when the brightness of day starts to give way to the darkness of the night. The clouds function in this picture as a barrier to the daytime and the dark landscape of the trees give me the impression that night is taking over.

In contrast, there were a few other main categories represented in the submissions including a literal telling of the time by taking a picture of a timepiece at exactly 7:30; however, as a viewer, unlike these sky pictures, I have no way of telling a.m. or p.m. Others took a picture of an activity that one would relate to 7:30 a.m. like drinking coffee or 7:30 p.m. like eating dinner. I observed two images of a shower but once again, it is hard for one to know whether this was taken in the morning or night.

Overall, this image effectively fits the topic at hand and I think any viewer would have a strong chance of guessing the time of day accurately.
