Animal - Chris Tapia

  1. This is a photograph of a sculpted Dalmatian dog with a bone in its mouth. This picture fits into the work as a whole because although it is not a real animal, it shows all of the features of an animal and was shot at an interesting angle that makes the photo unique (as requested). At this angle, our eye goes right to the black eye of the dog, this would be more effective is there was not a dark shadow over the black eye. It kind of hurts the eye to look directly at this focal point.

The composition is interesting, as the dog is cropped tightly in the frame, making the main focus the dog’s face. We do not see the nose of the dog, just majority of one side of his face, his ear and most of his head. We also see his collar and a good portion of his body in the background. The photo is an example of macro photography, as we see detailed elements of the sculpture, such as its chipped white paint, and the cracking lines that add texture. There are many curves on the face of the dog, which allows us to nearly feel the sculpture. Because this is a macro image, the dog’s face is the only thing that is in focus in the photograph. The dog’s body is visible, yet it is out of focus in the background. I really like this picture, and to make it even better, I would brighten it up a bit because its darkness takes away from the photo as a whole.
