Something I Can't Live Without -- Alli Hedden

  1. Fire! the element that drove people out of darkness and into the light. Warmth, sustenance, protection and summertime cooking. Maybe its the pyromaniac in me, that I'm sure is in all of us, but I love watching fires burn and eat up wood. The oranges to blues of a flame, reds and yellows are warm and inviting but threatening because of their extreme heat. The way the wood becomes ash or a brightly lit ember is exciting. It is certainly something humanity could not live with out and a basic need for many reasons.
I love the fast whisping movement of the flames as well. Like they are made of liquid.
Alli nailed it in this one. She nailed the assignment and she nailed the photograph. I like seeing her work every day as I do the whole classes creative responses to each prompt. Hers are handled with thought and creativity and she has a good eye. The only thing this photo would have benefited from would be a shorter depth of field. Making the background blur even more would help bring the fire and wood texture out. I like the shutter speed alowing the flames to look smooth like a fabric or flowing water. I don't need or want to see the shape of each flame like a cartoon fire. I want to feel its movement like its a breathing creature.
