1st Day of Summer - Jess Moore

  1. I would name this photo One Cool Afternoon. There are nice cool blue tones, shadow, ice cream, Spiderman, it just makes me think of cool in every sense of the word. I get a first-day-of-summer-school-is-out story behind this shot. This seems like an amazing way to spend a Friday afternoon and gives a nice kick-start to that feeling of freedom summer vacation brings. The kid is wearing flip-flops and shorts, so he seems cool and comfortable with the weather.

The colors just evoke a nice cool beach breeze vibe, though it was probably pretty hot in reality. The shaved ice (or snow cone?) along with the peek of the words "ice cream" at the top relate to cool things as well. I love all of the different shades of blue and the pop of red in the shaved ice and the Spiderman shorts (which are also cool in an awesome sort of way, rather than temperature). The kid is standing under the shadow of the awning, which brings coolness to mind once more. Going out for ice cream at any age is exciting, so that adds a cool factor for me too.

The shot is cropped and aligned perfectly to me. I like how the right edge of the photo ends where the awning seems to. My eye is immediately drawn down the counter to where the kid is standing with his shaved ice. The lines of the blue building seem to point right down towards the kid as well. My only critique is that the white parts of the building and the signs seem glaringly white. I know you were outside and that it is summer, but the sign in the middle and the top of the next building are a little bit distracting. (Not much, just enough that I notice them each time.) That might be a matter of going into Photoshop and playing with exposure and brightness.

Nice work! Now I want to go get ice cream.
