  2. “Boundless”. This title is appropriate because the photograph depicts the boundless energy of both youth and the summer season.

I am not sure the timing of this image could have been any better. The photographer’s use of a fast shutter speed to stop the action as the skateboard flips—with its wheels up—adds, interestingly, to the perceived movement in the shot. The seemingly precarious positioning of the skater, with his feet off to the side of the board rather than hovering over it, adds an element of tension to the shot—will he stick the landing, or did he miss it?

The photographer’s use of depth of field, as well as the lines of the photograph, ensures that the skateboarder is the focus for the viewer. The background is not distracting because it is largely out of focus (I think you could have gotten away with even shallower depth of field, assuming your camera allowed you to increase shutter speed). However, the tree branches in the background seem to point to the subject, compelling the viewer’s gaze toward the subject even more than it already is. I also like the line of the fence in the background—it almost appears the skater is sitting on top of it.

The colors in the photo are generally attention-grabbing but not over the top. The greens and the pinks of the board, the orange of the shoes, the color in his hat breathe life into the photo; the blue sky serves to accentuate the skater. The only colors I do not care for are the buildings in the background, which seem to detract from the shot.

I would suggest lightening the subject’s skin tone to provide more detail; he appears darker than the rest of the photo. In addition, while the black color of the t-shirt and the subject’s hair might have been difficult to bring out, I would like to have seen more detail here.
