@ 7:30 - Maria Nardini

  1. Maria provides two photographs; I am going to address the first, the glasses on a rack. This photograph depicts two parallel rows of stemmed beer glasses hanging upside down from what appears to be a storage or drying rack. The word “Belgium” is legible in red letters on the glasses, suggesting they are reserved for Belgian whites, or perhaps just advertising that brand of beer. At the top of the image is a dark area punctuated by small light sources that I cannot tell what is. There is a high level of reflection on the glasses that makes the image more interesting, suggesting both internal lights as well as natural light from a window. There are also good lines formed by the rack and glasses heading toward a vanishing point on an indeterminate beige background, perhaps a wall. There is a high degree of contrast in the photo, which for me detracts from it a bit—more contrast and the image would be surreal, less and it would be more realistic. The contrast level here seems to fall right in between.

To me, the photograph fits well into the 7:30 requirement, but it’s not readily apparent in what manner. I would guess that either she is at a pub post-Happy Hour, perhaps with a semi-full glass somewhere, next to where the glasses are stored for the customers, or she is working as either a bartender or waitress and took the photograph from that perspective. I cannot find clues in the photo that tell me which, or perhaps another option altogether.
