Self Portrait - Jessica Moore

  1. This is a very interesting self-portrait that focuses on the subject’s necklace. The image is likely taken with a macro setting utilizing a very short depth of field. Two- thirds of the image focuses on the subject’s chest and necklace while the remaining third of the image is filled with the subject’s bright lime green shirt and background. The green shirt has a thin white lined pattern that is mostly out of focus and not distracting from the focus of the image. Above the shirt on the top left of the image you can see the some of the background, which is a dark green that compliments the lime green shirt in a very nice way. The light overall is a bit subdued which makes me think this image was taken indoors.

The focus of the image is on the necklace in the lower right portion of the frame. Your eye goes straight to the necklace because it is the sharpest shape in the image. The necklace appears to be stainless steel with a relatively short ball chain and a flag like charm. The silver charm stands out well against the subject’s fair skin. The banner like charm extends from the necklace with the words “Say Something Silly” engraved. The banner has a slight wave or curve as it extends out from the chain. The type that is engraved on the banner is very playful and matches well with what it says.

I like that this portrait focuses on an object rather than a face. The saying on the necklace tells a lot about personality – it says that Jess is lighthearted and is interested in making people laugh or having others make her laugh. It says that she has a playful side and doesn’t always want to take things too seriously.

  2. Selective focus on the necklace works very well for the theme. Who are you? You've chosen not to show us the obvious, but text. "Silly" and the fun green patterned shirt. Who else is she, we ask?
