My lunch, today--Yi Xue

  1. This photo is a studio shot of a piece of a maki roll full of carrots, imitation crab meat, sesame seeds, pickled radish, egg, and what looks like a bit of steamed green. There seems to be a second piece of roll that is smeared with a yellow sauce or egg. The roll is overflowing the frame from the right corner instead of being center, allowing the focus to become the crisp veggies framed in the seaweed and rice. The asymmetrical placement in the frame allows the maki to be illuminated with a halo of white that could be the Styrofoam package it was brought home in.

If I was not adverse to pickled radish, I would want a bite. This shot could use a sharper focus to give the detail to the carrot but knowing the limitations of the camera being used, I am not keen for that. Overall, the orange of the carrots balances well against the white background making the eye flit from each ingredient snugged into the tight seaweed with mouth-watering anticipation.

The white background makes this look more appealing and homemade than being put against a black background. A black background would suggest an evening appetizer or hip sushi bar that always has a 30-minute wait. To me, this makes me nostalgic for Jeonju-si where sushi rolls use all these ingredients and wrap the sliced roll in foil to carry home. Their rolls are larger than the usual one sees in the American grocery store which gives a tighter circle than the rounded squares one is usually served.
