This image has a number of dichotomies that make interesting and enjoyable to view. The image feels cold at the same time it feels warm; at one point It reminded me of a kind of abstract of a distant planet or large asteroid with no atmosphere, freezing on the dark side, but warm where it faced the sun. The image also feels refreshing and inviting. I would attribute that to the varying shades of yellow, as well as that it is obviously a photo of a scoop of ice cream, and there’s always room for ice cream. What I first notice about the photograph is the backlighting, followed by the constant yellow, and then the crevices in the middle of the scooped ice cream. As I look at it longer, I began to look at details. Around the edges of the photograph it appears more abstract, invoking clouds or a sunset over the ocean. In the darker center, all I get is… ice crystals and ice cream. The focus is good although shallow, which helps develop both the image as ice cream (in focus) and the image as abstract art (soft focus). While largely centered, the scoop is not uniform and therefore emphasizes light and dark in different degrees, adding to the image’s effectiveness. I would like to see more contrast in the darker area, but am not sure that can be developed because of the light in the background. I enjoy the photograph because of both its abstract and realistic qualities. The overall photo is inviting, and encourages me to look at the detail, where I find things I didn’t see at first glance. It’s more than ice cream, but please pass the spoon. DB

The combination of the backlight and the texture make this image really beautiful. The orange color just pops.
