Favorite Place at UB - Michelle Stidham

  1. I really like the brightness of this photo and how crisp the white and the green look together. There's very little color, but the way you composed this photo and the angle you went with bring out depth. The different lines of the railings and the ceiling are great, and give me context for the setting. The angle you shot the green plexiglass (or whatever that is, I've never been sure) makes me keep looking up and I feel as though I'm actually there on the landing looking up the staircase.

I had trouble taking this photo myself because of the lights and all of the white space, so I admire your work here. It's very bright and there is a lot of white in the walls, but it doesn't appear to be overexposed to me. There also appears to be a wide range of focus in the photo itself, but your angle is what makes this an effective photo. The green catches my eye more than anything else, and the lights highlight it. I first look to the lower green square and then my eyes move up to the second one (which is good since it's a staircase, so your eyes move up with it). I would say that the higher green square's lights behind the railing are what my eyes rest on last and longest, and composition-wise, that appears to be the middle of your photo.

Great job! This photo makes me want to go back and try to photograph the stairway again.

  2. Description as if someone can't see it:

This image is looking up two stories of a wide spiral-type staircase. Everything is white except for the lime green of the Plexiglas squares above two doorways on each floor. The crisp brightness of the white is balanced by the pop of green and helps the lines of the banister and the ceiling stand out. The composition and the lines make you feel as though you are actually standing on a step and looking up to the two landings.
