Fun Whimsical Colorful Sweet Youth Old-fashioned Lemons Treat Playful
The peppermint sticks alone produce so many memories, and the way the sticks are placed, and the angle of the shot, emphasizes those feelings.
With so many swirls and peppermint sticks, there is a general feeling of managed chaos – just like playing outside in the summer. The sticks are pointing in the same general direction, and the swirls are rotating around the sticks the same way. This repetition adds to the whimsical nature of the picture and subject. In this image, the back ends of the sticks are pointing to the top right of the frame – out of focus – and the tops of the sticks are lined up at the bottom of the image, in focus and cropped at the left. The bottom quarter of the image is the surface of a light blond wooden table. This is a comfortable amount of space to let your eye rest from the bright swirls.
The texture of the candy is not glossy, which just happens to be my favorite. As I focus on the stick in the center of the image, I really can remember the texture of the peppermint stick in my mouth, as well as using these for lemon sticks. You can almost here in the background a county fair. And smell fried dough.
The white and red colors of the sticks give the image great contrast, and the short depth of field and the close crop of the subject makes the viewer pause, and you get lost filling in the swirls your eye rhythmically working its way around each stick and filling in what you can’t see. In doing so, my memories of summer and youth took over.

Crop the lower edge a bit and give us nothing but peppermint.
