Something I Made - David Byrd

  1. I love the duality of this image both in terms of color and focus.

  2. The image is a portion of a charcoal drawing on an easel of a torso of a woman. To the right of the drawing in the background is the model with a red skirt on. The image has a short depth of field so the model in the background is not in focus but is enough that the viewer can see the story of the model standing and the artist drawing the figure. The easel and charcoal drawing are blocking the natural light in the background that is flooding the body of the model. The drawing is the whole top left of the frame and leads the eye to the model behind. The red skirt worn by the model helps to hold your eye in the bottom right of the image. If the drawing was framed in the center I do not think the image would be as effective. The image has this soft quality to it which helps play up the charcoal and it makes the image feel warm and inviting. If it were hash or if the drawing was brighter I do not think it would be as effective. It is a wonderful image and tells the story of that very moment.
