Shoes, Not Yours - Dave Byrd

  1. The photo has an ingenious concept. The soft green color discriminate the red, drag my eye to where it is located—a slim sole that has been worn out.

In the distance, the blurred background causes me to think of forest. In the middle ground, two green-soled shoes lean against each other. One is lying down the ground horizontally, and another is standing vertically. Both rest on a greenish pipe, which has the same texture as the bamboo. Another ”bamboo” running across the front forms the foreground in the picture, hiding the toes two inches more.

Green becomes the primary—it sprawls into the background, foreground, and sole. However, different levels of green are showing in the sole: wavelike configuration is dark green, and the light green is in a honeycombed shape. The natural light discloses each detail of shoes.

The tiny cherry color makes the shoe stand out and become the focus of the picture. It is an interesting contrast between red and green. Although the third color—blue, which is the color of the shoes—appears in the photo, the photographer blurs them as an unnoticeable backdrop.

The shape of the shoe is distinctive. Such a slim shape arouses my curiosity—who is the owner of this shoe? Is she or a kid or a young lady? The visual aesthetics results from display vertically, which stretches the length of the shoes, creating the exaggerated artistic effect.

The tone of the picture is light and smooth. The vertical composition follows the rule of thirds. Short depth field and lower ISO and higher shutter speed are involved in this photo shot.
