Self Portrait - Lapedra Tolson

  1. I Choose You! (Mainly because I love those stems.)

    Now, to describe this:
This black and white photo uses a background of a hardwood floor to display two books, one on building successful logos and branding, the other on the attitude basics found in leaders. While the first hints at the photographer’s profession and including it in the self portrait is an indication as to how important design, branding and image to be concise, is in their life, the second title on attitude basics would enhance that. Added to the mix are two very different shoes, a black and white high-top by Nike and a racey animal print platform pump. The four items are placed asymmetrically against each other and vertically against the floor boards. The pairing of these elements suggest at a woman, or crossdresser to be fair, is on the journey to become a successful designer.

If the phrase," Walk a mile in another one's shoes..." was the assignment, this would be a good fit. Not knowing my classmate beyond the classes we share, I would describe this as a professional profile of a multifaceted woman that shoots for Essence magazine. This individual prides herself in being the best in her field and the best in a social setting. Using two titles to reflect these aspects of her personality instead of a youtube video brings attention to how dedicated she is internalizing these elements into her being. Coupled with two very different shoes- one a spotless high top, the other a animal printed platform pump- suggests that this woman is comfortable with having a foot into the urban world and corporate America.

  3. The fighting juxtaposition of the left/right brain and the physicality of the shoes make this image really fun. We know exactly who you are without the face. In this case, it would be entirely unnecessary.
