When I saw this photo, I knew it was a tree, but I really had to stare at it. It reminds me of something from a fairy tale or a SciFi movie, but it's got a dark edge to it. The way the white branches stand out against the purple leaves is a little bit unsettling (in a good way). It is so unnatural-looking, and I really like that perspective. It seems as if there is light illuminating from the branches themselves. Because it's such an unnatural color for a tree, I was also reminded of neurons and dendrites and other microscopic sciency things. The way you played with color makes this look like a night image (almost something from the Blair Witch Project), but the purple is a soothing purple at the same time, which I think is why I find it a little eerie.
Though you took this photo horizontally, the way that you composed it works with the prompt because it's a vertical look up at the tree. I look up the vertical line of the trunk, and the limbs extend upwards further drawing my eye up and off the photo. I am immediately drawn to the leaves because of the color, and the white of the branches gives depth to the image. I like the texture of the trunk at the bottom of the photo, and the way you played with focus. I don't think this image would have been as successful if the focus started at the bottom edge of the photo. The contrast between the purple and the white make the branches and the leaves the important part of the image. I feel like you could have worked with exposure just a pinch to make the white branches less bright, and it would have had the same impact. Your take on the subject is much more interesting than if you had taken a picture looking up at your average tree with its natural colors. It could have been a beautiful image, but I like the unsettling tone of this one.
