This picture caught my eye because it made me stop and think. I wanted to know the significance of the white cross with the shiny, bright orange bow. Why was it there? How long had it been there? Is it in memory of someone? Was orange that person’s favorite color? Or, was there a completely different significance?
I like the decision to use a long depth of field for this shot. While the orange bow is the main focus, I can still see a great deal of the background which is only slightly out of focus. I enjoy being able to see which house this gate and sidewalk leads to. The fence, the cross and the sidewalks create nice vertical lines to guide me from the foreground to the background.
I would’ve liked the composition of this picture more if the photographer moved to the right at an angle so that only the white house was in the background, removing the brick rowhouses in view on the right side of the image. Then my eye would go straight from the bow to the owner’s house behind it, creating a more effective story in my mind.
The image evokes a sense of sadness. Aside from the cross, it looks like it is a gloomy day because of the gray sky. There is also an empty chair on the front porch of the white house and I can only make out a faint light on inside. But even though the gate is closed and it is a gloomy day, I don’t feel threatened or scared to enter – and it all comes back to that bright orange bow.

I like it. It has a documentary feel to it.
ReplyDeleteI second Ms. Tolson. I think there is a photo collection of public memorials like this done or being done.
