Old - Jess Moore

  1. Very nice use of depth of field. I like that you didn't clean up the phone and we see the dust/texture. The point of focus seems to be on the edge of the rotery above the 9. It would work slighly better to put focus on one of the numbers. The image is flat. Use levels/curves in PS to bring up the contrast.

This image instantly makes me think vintage because these types of phones are now a thing of the past - something seen nowadays at grandmother’s house and thrift stores. The phone feels vintage because it’s not something many of us use on a daily basis. Those of us who have one is most likely only for nostalgia or memories. We would rarely see a device like this used for the practical purpose it’s meant for – making a call.

I really like the close up shot of the dial and numbers. I also like that the focus is on the number and rotary holes which helps associate how the phone works with the numbers. The light is also positioned nicely at the focal point of the image which puts most emphasis on the number/dialing device. The semicircular motif is echoed well throughout the composition of this photo. The center semicircle of the phone is cropped at the top, surrounded by the series of finger holes for the numbers, surrounded by the raised circle that encases the numbers. The red phone with tan/cream numbers feels like a very classic color combination of the fifties. This image would probably not be anywhere near as effective if the phone were black or blue – red seals the deal.

As Julie mentioned above – it is nice that you didn’t clean up the imperfections of the phone because it helps to hold the vintage feel. In today’s society it is almost strange to see the word operator – the word or job of an operator almost feels vintage. I think the phone would most certainly have the classic – ring ring – tone.

  4. Michelle, I had to tell you - the phone is hooked up, and the ringer is so loud, they must her it down the street! I have to laugh, when I can't find my cell phone, I use it to dial that number, It takes forever to go through all 10 digits with the rotary.
