Not My Shoe--Audrey Harman

  1. This photo is a close up of Donald Draper’s shoes. Why so specific? Because this chocolate brown lace up has the pale yellow stitching framing a dotted detail added to the leather is a part of the Mad Men era. While fashion is borrowing from that age, this close up does not provide a hint at the kind of roads this shoe has walked. The polka dots are a camel tan that pops again the finer cracking appearing around the brass tipped lace holes suggesting that this shoe is as old as Mr. Draper or a thoughtful aging process done to obtain the deep brown color. I find the near black piping that edges out the split were the laces meet a muted addition to the family of browns that have been used on this shoe. The tight lacing obtained with a brown lace darker than the leather that is truer to the original dye job that is being disrupted by the fine webbing of cracks.

I like this photo. It captures a show that would take a lot of patience to craft this shoe and the time put into it would be worth the amount paid as this shoe should last 50 years. I could see my honorary grandfather wearing this and with some prodding, finding that the the cobbler in Lexington Market has been there for the past 80 years and used to make shoes as well. I would look forward to the day I would be able to wear this kind of shoe and do it justice.
