The subject in this picture is a mix of chocolate and vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup on top. The dessert is shot with a short-depth of field, so that the main focus is on the left side of the image, specifically the chocolate syrup being squeezed or poured out onto the vanilla ice cream below. The photographer used a high shutter speed in order to freeze the motion of the syrup as it drips onto the ice cream. This technique was executed very well and creates a nice line that guides you through the image. Your eye is drawn to the action on the left side and then spans across to the right to see the remaining scoops of ice cream. The foreground is in better focus than the background which is blurry.
There is appropriate use of lighting on the scoops of ice cream so that I can make out the round, circular shape of each scoop and the swirled and speckled patterns of chocolate syrup on top. I also get a fantastic sense of the texture. I can see the various levels of syrup and it conveys this sweet stickiness of the image content.
In the background, I can just barely make out what looks to be a glass container that the ice cream was photographed in. I wish the reflection on the glass container could be removed in the upper-right hand corner. I also think it would be helpful to adjust the tone of the dark grayish background. I’d like to see a higher contrast of colors in this area so the syrup drip really pops.
I think the decision to crop this image in this fashion works well. I also think the photographer could have zeroed even further in on the one scoop of vanilla with the chocolate syrup being poured on it from above. Overall, this ice cream image works well to capture the essence of this delicious treat.
You've lost detail in the whites. Use PS levels/curves to bring it back. The short depth of field is a good idea. You need to rotate yourself, or the camera, so the in focus stream is more of a focal point. What we see off the top of the bat, is the large out of focus scoop. Idea is good… just needs a bit more work.
