Boredom-Imani Carter

  1. Title- "The Mourning Period"

While the assignment is boredom, the animal print sheets and lock of hair give this a feeling of a pause between crying jags over a recent breakup. I think the hint of a white strap that I am interpreting as a formed sleeveless white tee shirt that may have belonged to the lost lover, that the photographer is capturing the subject before she permits a lone tear to escape.

I recall from sociology that humans are inclined to reflect their own emotions on an individual that is not experiencing any particular emotion that the elements, mainly the sheets, in this photo suggest the story of lost love. I personally think that less light on the subject's back may have given this more of the boredom. Presently, the light covers the subject like a blanket which adds to the overall theme that the subject needs to be comforted. I want to suggest that looking at the camera would help making this look more boring but I imagine that the subject' eyes would add a flirtatious tone thus changing the theme from loss to anticipation.

Overall, I think boredom is an interesting visual to capture as anyone bored is more likely about to fret over finding something to do and having that something fail in maintaining their interests. A level of listlessness can quickly move towards despondency or a degree of anger. This is close. A change in the place being shot, a table instead of bed, may help.
